Teeth Whitening: All You Need to Know

Do you have discolored teeth? Are you searching for ways to brighten them? Teeth whitening is what you need.

You can improve the color of your teeth by at least two shades by getting an in-office whitening treatment. Read on to learn all the basics about teeth whitening, how it's done, and how to maintain whitened teeth.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of getting rid of stains and discoloration on the surface of your teeth enamel to achieve a radiant smile. It is one of the most widely used cosmetic dental procedures.

You can whiten your teeth by visiting a dental office or by using whitening toothpaste, gels, rinses, or strips.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

An in-office teeth whitening procedure is performed by a dentist and takes about 90 minutes from start to finish. It involves the following processes:

  • The dentist carefully examines the level of discoloration on your teeth.
  • The dentist will then cleanse your teeth of plaque and food debris before starting the actual process.
  • Next, the dentist will use a retractor to gain full access to your teeth while preventing your tongue and lips from coming into contact with the cleansing agent.
  • The dentist will apply a hydrogen peroxide solution to your teeth before using a laser to activate the agent.
  • The solution is left on for about 30-40 minutes, after which the peroxide is rinsed off. In some cases, the dentist will apply a second coat to achieve a better shade of white.

Tips to Care for Whitened Teeth

The effects of teeth whitening are not permanent, and you may see the sheen wear off after a few months. However, you can ensure that your teeth remain bright for longer by using the following care tips:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that stain. This includes coffee, tea, red wine, berries, sauces, and other heavily colored foods.
  • If you do eat or drink staining foods, rinse your mouth soon after.
  • Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day.
  • Sip your drinks through a straw.
